On Monday 10 September some members of the RC of Emerald attended the Crime Prevention Meeting at the Emerald Police Station.  This was organised in association with the Council and Neighbourhood Watch.  The information focused on CPTED – Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.  There are funding grants available for up to $10k which can be applied for through the Council annually to upgrade areas identified by groups.

The 5 principles of CPTED are:

  • Surveillance (especially ensuring good lines of sight)
  • Access Control/Target Hardening (pathways, locked doors, clear entrances)
  • Territorial Reinforcement – promotes ownership and defines public from private
  • Space Management/Image – keep clean and graffiti clear
  • Activity Support – use spaces often eg activities in parks
More information will be forthcoming as the Council builds on the initial meetings in the area.
