I hail from Northern Ireland, where I spent my early years amidst the rustic charm of a farm. As the second eldest among my siblings, I assumed considerable responsibilities following my mother's passing when I was just eight. When I was 13, Life took a turn when my father brought home and introduced us to our new stepmother, whom I never quite warmed to.

 

My path changed when I met Ron, my husband-to-be, at a lively dance in Ireland. We soon tied the knot and embarked on a new adventure by relocating to Australia to explore its offerings. It was there that I marked my 21st birthday, and before we knew it, Australia became our permanent home.

 

Ron took charge of a service station in Monbulk, where he applied his mechanical skills, while I pitched in by attending to customers' needs, from fueling up to tire and oil checks. Despite our attempts at retirement, destiny led us to the Monbulk Rose Farm, a venture we've since passed down through generations, now lovingly tended by our family.

 

In my leisure, I find solace in crafting, knitting, and nurturing plants in the garden. Though I'm relatively new to Emerald Glades, I am hopeful to forge lasting friendships within the community.

 

 

Mike Gill

I was born in Surrey, U.K., and have a younger brother named Collin. My father served as an engineer in the army. Leaving school at 16, I took on a role on a dairy farm. In 1959, at the age of 17, I relocated to Australia with my mother, father, and brother, settling in East Malvern. My educational journey led me to RMIT.

 

I loved Rugby. During my schooling years I played Rugby for the Melbourne Rugby Union Club. Over the years, I gained diverse work experiences. Initially, I served as a lab assistant in the paint division at ICI. Later, I worked as a purser for Orient shipping. Subsequently, I found my niche in the accounts division at GLAXTO Pharmaceuticals, dedicating three decades to the company.

 

During this period, I moved to Macclesfield to be closer to my brother and resided on a 12-acre hobby farm. I sold the property, believing I needed something more suitable. Which has brought me to Emerald Glades.

One significant change in my life is the loss of my ability to drive. Managing my finances has become crucial, and you might often find me organizing paperwork in my room.

 

My advice to the younger generation today would be to get your vocational guidance set and make a good wage. Pick an ideal lifestyle that suits you because you are going to be in it for a long time. If you get on the wrong track, get off it.

What is Club Assembly? There is no guest speaker and we hold a behind the badge session. It is an opportunity to check in on how we are going and for individuals to have input.  It can be a time to have a voice and have an open and honest conversation about how things are going.  The evening is completely about the club and inward looking – how we are functioning and how we are doing as a club. 

 

Talkin It Up – Mental Health Forum for Youth – PP PHF Gloria Hargreaves

• $1000 Cardinia Foundation Grant applied for
• Emerald Psychology are providing a $500 sponsorship
• Health and Fitness keen to be involved with a $500 sponsorship
• John Coleman from Monbulk – Bendigo Bank want to be involved – the bank will be putting in an application for $1000
• Monbulk and Belgrave clubs are involved and helping develop the event
• Dr Dan in Monbulk is on the panel as well as keynote speaker, a young person and a representative from Headspace
• Emerald and Monbulk Secondary Colleges are supportive as well as other schools locally
• Emma Firth from Cardinia Council is also involved
• Registration will open at the end of April
• Please keep date free – 25^th July 2024

Youth – PP PHF Marcus Adams

• Rotary Overseas Re-located Playgrounds – thank you for those who attended last Saturday to assist - we doing it again this weekend so please sign up.

 

• RYDA – Rotary Youth Driver Awareness 25^th April- 4 spots so far, would like to have 8 attend
• Breakfast club going well, not enough members coming through but if we are there for the those that need it, it is worthwhile
• Board agreed for club to support a 15-18 year-old for Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge 6-8 April this year – contacted Emerald Secondary College but if anyone knows someone please let Marcus know – sponsoring $1200

EarlyAct

 

Paula and Kerith are the coordinators and doing a great job – Kerith provided a report on the exciting progress afoot!

• EarlyAct is open to grade 5&6 at Emerald PS
• 20 pupils have signed up already
• Meeting this week where the committee is to be sorted and taking on projects – one for the school, the community, international and the environment
• We are letting them work out what they want to do so they feel involved
• Meetings take place once a fortnight – Thursdays at 2pm
• Next meeting they will be appointing the office bearers

General Business

 

PP PHF Don Borg - A discussion took place about the quality of food and price of meals at the pub as well as the lighting and surface safety of the carpark.

 

The Board will report to the club more formally after discussions with the pub management.
