Our Club is already back in the swing of things, with most returning to the Paradise Hotel for our first meeting of the year – there may be a few added noisy ones coming along this week! DG We Love You Ken Miller was in the house, and welcome back to Roy Bowyer after your leave of absence.
A reminder to those on the Board that this Wednesday night will be our Club’s first Board Meeting of the year.
Thank you to VP Emma Clark for putting together the market survey, and thanks also to those that responded. I anticipate that the committee will be putting recommendations to the Board this week about its future.
There might be a little bit of District Grant news coming our way at this meeting too for Youth Chair Tina McInerney to report about.

RYDA run by Road Safety Education, specialise in road safety education – RYDA is the flagship program
Best practice is follow up and reinforcing the message
Rotary developed the first RYDA program in March 2001 wanted program to be best practice and changes in road safety and that key messages stay relevant for young people.Once Rotary got it running brought in an organisation for governance.Road Safety Education was developed.Rotary Youth Driver Awareness
Between 2016 and 2021 1390 young people aged 17-25 died on Australian roads with 30x that number seriously injured.Overrepresented group in death on the roads
Getting behind the wheel is one of the most dangerous things a young person will do in their life
P Plate license to 1 year is the most dangerous time to be driving – if you understand the statistics, you can make informed decisions and be aware
Influence of the passenger on road crashes 3 passengers 21 or younger = 4x chance of an accident.2 passengers 21 or younger 2x chance of an accident
RYDA focused on best-practice – need to avoid shock tactics so focusing on short term consequences.Fines for having a mobile phone and can influence decisions.Program gets reviewed annually we have an academic advisory board that oversees the program.We also take comments from facilitators and teachers as well as students to change the program with new content.
What is RYDA
Years 10-12

It also supports teachers in delivering school curriculum
National context – run in most states moving into WA this year.Metro program coordinators in rural Rotary facilitates the programs as it is a lot of heavy lifting for the clubs.19 staff AU and NZ.We have 43 Rotary organising committees around AU.434 facilitators around AU.
RYDA looks at the whole of school approach – teaching resources, reaching out to parents, online community created and embedding learning into the school.Curriculum modules to include with Physics.
Stories are provided by a crash survivor and someone who killed a person for example.Interactive vehicle, driving conditions etc on how a crash could happen and a driving instructor demonstrating emergency braking.
Road choices run by a police officer
Facilitators work with students to develop personalised strategies for road safety.
Corporate partnerships are developed to fund the program
Surveys before and after and retention over time – 2020 survey was undertaken to see % of correct answers

After RYDA – 79%
Later (retention) – 72%
84% of teachers improve their road safety and 43% of parents said that child picked them up on bad practices
RYDA costing as a whole - $45 per student as we have corporate (and Govt involvement).$25 per student metro $15 in rural.Every student needs this education in Vic.
Rotary clubs volunteer, support financially and help introduction to schools
Emerald SC came to Lilydale – half of cohort came – trying to run program on 4 April at the school this year – provisional date

Local businesses to recognise their outstanding staff and also network
EDRA – Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association has been promoting the event
150 – 200 businesses to approach – EDRA taken 60 or so
March 28 at the Puffing Billy Lakeside Centre
Capacity of 120 - dignitaries
At the moment, 100 people with limit of 8 per business
Certificate and trophy for the winner – businesses pay for the meals
EDRA has worked with council to waive parking fee
Will need to restrict Rotary numbers – 6-10 Rotarians
