Dear Friends

Tuesday night's meeting was full of fun and frivolity. We honoured Australian Rotary Health’s ‘Lift the Lid’ campaign which raises funds for mental health awareness with their main focus being on children aged 0-12. Members and guests came in a variety of hats/head gear from beanies and caps to some truly fabulous creations including Kerith’s Mickey Mouse head gear and Melinda’s amazing, automated unicorn head piece. Thank you to all members for really getting into the spirit of this event. Whilst we all had fun we also collected over $340 for this very important cause. Thank you to Lorna and Jess for collecting donations.

Our planned guest speaker, the Major of Cardinia, Jack Kowarzik, unfortunately was unable to attend our meeting. Anna entertained us with a quiz to get our grey matter working, which sadly didn’t help me. Again, there was great levity as we tried to come up with the right answers. John Shaw came out the winner and won an original plate featuring kookaburras. Thank you to Anna for an entertaining quiz.

Club members were pleased to welcome our newest member, Jacquie Forsyth who was inducted by President Peter. Jacquie was sponsored by PP Kelly and will be mentored by Andrew. We look forward to having you in the club Jacquie.

This week we welcome Stefanie Straub CEO of Puffing Billy and look forward to hearing her vision for our iconic steam train.

Rotary Snippet - Service Above Self

The first motto of Rotary International, "He Profits Most Who Serves Best", was approved at the second Rotary Convention in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by Art Sheldon who made a speech in 1901 that included the remark "He profits most who serves his fellows best". At the same time, Ben Collins, President of RC Minneapolis, commented that the proper way to organise a Rotary Club was through the principle of "Service, not self".

These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 International Convention. They were, 'He profits most who serves best' and 'Service above self'.

In 1989, 'Service Above Self was established as the principal motto of Rotary as it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

Welcome & Opening:

Meeting started with a Rotary Invocation and toast to Australia and Rotary International.

Our very own Anne St Clair stepped in with an Entertaining Quiz Night.

John Shaw was the winner with the highest number of correct answers and won an original plate featuring kookaburras.
