Greetings One and All!

Welcome to another wondrous week of mystery and mayhem!

Last week’s meeting saw us welcome three guests which was terrific.  I hope they will join us again this week to get a bit more of an idea about Rotary and our club.

It was terrific to see Tom Watson too; his first time on Zoom...hopefully he’ll be able to tap in again soon.  Thanks Ken, for making that happen.  🤗 As we know, it’s important to stay in touch with our friends, especially those who may not be too tech savvy.

Gloria gave a really interesting talk, complete with a shared screen slide show presentation (look at us go with our technological wizardry!!) on RAM - Rotarians Against Malaria. The numbers of affected people and countries is quite staggering...a huge job to be undertaking, but Rotary is up for the challenge!  No doubt we’ll be hearing a lot more about RAM as the years progress.

The Interact Club of St Margaret’s School held its first interest meeting by Zoom on Thursday.  It was well attended and met with enthusiasm by students & teachers which was great.  Our club has partnered with Berwick Rotary to sponsor the new Interact Club.  Hopefully it will “Build goodwill and better friendships” and bring opportunities to foster relationships with our neighbours down the hill. 😊

This coming week will be a “Dress For Dinner” themed meeting.  Please wear your finery - and certainly feel free to eat your dinner at the meeting as well.  Partners are more than welcome to join us, as always...perhaps a nice  candlelight dinner for two (with a few onlookers!!) A bit of fun to keep life interesting!  Lol!

With many clubs holding meetings via Zoom, have you thought about using this as a great opportunity to “visit” another club?  No need to leave the comfort and warmth of your own home...it’s great!  We each have a copy of the District Directory that lists all the clubs in District 9810 with the days they meet.  More importantly, there are contact details for each club...

The challenge for this week, pick a club, send an email explaining who you are and ask for the invitation link to one of their meetings!  If you want to go further afield, use rotary.org to locate a club anywhere in the world, contact that club and see if you can join an online meeting!!  Prize (ok, so it might just be Big Kudos) to the person who is able to attend the furthest club meeting!  Have fun!
He is the info for our meeting on the 5th May.  See you there Dressed For Dinner.  😊🤵🏻🦹‍♀️👸🏼👨🏼‍💼

Did we see a few mossie nets and hats on screen?!

Guest Speaker Gloria Hargreaves RAM – Rotarians Against Malaria – (Southern Region Coordinator and National Secretary)

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) is a volunteer-run organisation working to eliminate malaria. It began in 1995 and since then has been focussed in PNG, the Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and occasionally Vanuatu. This year however RAM is also supporting West Timor (Indonesia) and once again Vanuatu.

Malaria is a disease of the developing world and impacts on 40% of the population. Sobering statistics from the World Health Organisation 2019 Malaria Report are as follows:

Annual global infection rate    228 million
Annual deaths                            405,000 (1,109 a day)
67% of deaths are children under 5
3 billion people are at risk

RAM works in conjunction with the MoH authorities in each of our focus countries and complements the work of other malaria organisations, most notably the Global Fund.

For many years research has gone into the development of a vaccine. There is one registered vaccine that has been administered over the past 3 years in Sub Saharan Africa where the incidence of malaria is huge but RTS,S has very limited success.  Long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), indoor residual spraying (IRS) are still the best methods of vector control.

Ongoing surveillance and monitoring, ensures accurate diagnosis which is essential for prompt and effective treatment.
Now that RAM is involved in 5 partner countries, it has to increase its funding capacity.

Adopt-a-Project was introduced to the 5 Rotary Regions in Australia and Southern Region is supporting Vanuatu’s ‘End Malaria in Vanuatu – for Good’ Project. Please read the handout that Ian Wakefield distributed which will give you more information about this very worthwhile RAM activity that involves all Victorian Rotary Districts.

For more information regarding what RAM is and does please visit our website www.ram.rawcs.com.au

COVID19

Unfortunately COVID19 is still with us and as we all get tired of the social isolation it may be timely to have a reminder on how to keep ourselves and others safe.
Personal actions to reduce your exposure
  • Stay at home.
  • You should only be outside for one of the following four reasons:
    • shopping for what you need - food and essential supplies
    • medical, care or compassionate needs
    • exercise in compliance with the public gathering requirements
    • work and study if you can’t work or learn remotely
  • If it isn’t for medical, care or compassionate needs, don’t visit friends, and don’t visit family at this time.
  • Do not travel overseas, interstate, take a cruise or travel domestically throughout Victoria unless absolutely necessary.
  • Stay healthy with good nutrition, regular exercise and sleep well. Limit alcohol intake and smokers may consider quitting.
  • Do not participate in community gatherings including community sport. Gatherings of more than two people are not allowed except for members of your immediate household and for work or education purposes, if you cannot learn remotely.
  • Take the following hygiene actions:
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or using the toilet. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitiser that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow.
    • Do not share drink bottles, crockery or cutlery.
  • Stop shaking hands, hugging or kissing as a greeting.
  • Ensure a distance of at least 1.5 metres is kept between yourself and others.
  • Get vaccinated for flu (influenza). This will help reduce the strain on the healthcare system as it deals with coronavirus (COVID-19). Vaccines are now available from your GP and pharmacy.
  • Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces regularly e.g. phones, keyboards, door handles, light switches, bench tops.

Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;

We've golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.
