Sparkle Vol 40 #28 - 4 February 2020 (Feb 04, 2020)

Hello Rotarians and welcome to February!

The shortest month of the year, yet one of our busiest! :)

Our first meeting of 2020 was a modest affair last week with a president whose mind was obviously still on Summer Holidays. Lol! Thank you to those who came along and enjoyed a Club Assembly featuring Russ Nielsen walking us through the upcoming All American Car Show & Swap Meet, on behalf of Richard and the committee. There have been some real challenges that they have had to work through over Christmas and we appreciate the time, effort and stress that has gone into this event. It’s such a large contributor to our yearly fundraising, that without it we wouldn’t be able to give so much back to our community and beyond. Please make yourselves available to help out on the day...16th FEBRUARY 2020. So much effort has gone into organising it and now it’s up to the whole club to make it successful!

This week we welcome Sabrina D’Angelo from D’Angelo’s Winery in Officer as our guest speaker. I think wine is a popular topic amongst Rotarians, so make sure you tell Lorna if you’re coming along as we need to let the pub know numbers (as we do each week!!)

DISTRICT CONFERENCE!!!

21st-22nd March

Have you registered!!?? Have you told Ian Ash if you need accommodation!!?? The program for the conference seems to have a good mix of some interesting guest speakers, local culture (including a paddle steamer flotilla on The Murray) and a bit of FUN - which is what we do so well! Gayle & her gang are working on costumes for the Saturday’s Gala Night...more to come there! Just a reminder that there are a couple of options for The Conference in that you/partners/family don’t have to attend the whole thing. It is possible just to “do” the Saturday afternoon Flotilla and Gala at an obviously reduced cost. ;)

Please consider coming along!! It’s definitely a case of the more, the merrier!!

New Year, New Faces Welcome!

My challenge for you this month is to see how many new faces (or old!!) we can see at our meetings. New faces bring new friends, new ideas and new energies! Just look at our lovely Roy!! :) We have so much fun within our club, why wouldn’t we want to share it with others!?

So the conundrum for this week...who do you know that would like to be a Rotarian!?

Last Week's Meeting

Thank you Shalini for the following notes from the meeting ...

Catherine welcomed all to the 1^st meeting for the year and said we have a busy year ahead. Look at the dates in the Sparkle: She advised that for District 98210, 5 clubs of the Gippsland collective have banded together to collect funds for the Bushfire appeal. Donations are being taken.

Conference is 20^th – 22^nd March. Ian gave a quick run-down. Friday night will be a meal at the Star Hotel at 7pm. Cost $30 followed by a Ghost Tourat 8.45pm. Cost $15. Accommodation costs are believed to be $150-$160 per room but still tbc. Saturday afternoon a Riverboat Tour is included in the Registration fee. Gayle has a committee working on the fancy-dress costumes. The event’s theme is Mascaraed and Gayle is looking at combining this with Rotary connecting the World.
All American Car Display & Mancave, Sunday 16^th February at Toomuc Reserve, Packenham. Russ Neilson provided a report on behalf of Richard and the committee. Estimate 1000 cars to be displayed and 3000 attendees. Members to attend from 7am. 4 car parking sites available. Event clashes with Football club’s market however still time to resolve issues. More information to come.
40^th Anniversary of the club is on 28^th March and will be celebrated on Sunday 3^rd May at the Yarra Ranges Winery. Details to come.

Lorna reminded all that we should continue to collect used postage stamps and foreign coins which are passed onto UNICEF via District. Also continue to collect plastic bottle tops.

John Shaw advised that he is again taking part in the District Bike Ride, which will take place the week ahead of Conference and the route is via the painted silos and over 550kms. He will be looking for sponsorship with funds going to Australian Rotary Health.

Completion of a great project

Club members may recall that PP PHF Russ Nielsen organised a grant of $2500 to the Gembrook Pre-School to upgrade their kitchen and a few of us went to the cheque presentation event earlier in 2019.

The project is now completed and Melissa Williamson has passed on the thanks of the group to us all with some photographs. It is hoped we can attend celebrations of the new kitchen shortly.
