It’s what Rotary is all about – people working together, having fun towards a great cause. Tuesday night’s bag packing session seemed to be enjoyed by everyone at The Independent and not only was the turnout from the Club excellent, it was also great to see good friends of the Club (Meg Fallon and Erica Gaunt) as well as other family members (thank you to the McAllister boys) helping out as well. Incredibly we completed the task in less than an hour (thanks to Ian Wakefield’s and John Henderson’s excellent organisation) which gave us more time to sample the delightful Atallah wines. Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to Marcus for organising the evening at The Independent.
Whilst we were all having fun at The Independent., Gloria Hargreaves was representing the Club at the District School Speech Contest Grand Final and guess who won that? No, not Gloria, but Ashton Smith who was the local winner from the recent PSSC held at Gembrook Primary. Those of you that were there last month will recall that Ashton beat off very strong competition and was a very worthy winner so no wonder he did us all proud at the big event!

PACT, which stands for Participation, Acknowledgement, Commitment, and Transformation, is a Toronto-based, award-winning charity supported by Rotary clubs in Canada. It works with at-risk young people and those who have committed crimes to change their direction in life. Entrepreneur and Toronto Rotary member David Lockett co-founded the program more than 20 years ago.
The organization works with the judicial system to identify repeat offenders ages 12-19 who may benefit from the program. After a young adult is convicted of a crime, the judge or judicial official refers them to PACT as part of a probation order.
PACT’s LifePlan Coaching differs from the traditional model of therapy or counseling in that it does not focus on the person’s past but rather concentrates on the present and future, says Lockett. The innovative program boasts a 65 percent success rate, with success meaning that the young person completes the program without re-offending.
Ashton Smith represented the area at the District Primary School Speech Competition and won! We knew the standard was high and this was borne out by Ashton's success - well done. Gloria supported Ashton on the night and has done a fabulous job, as always ensuring the smooth running and delivery of this program for our local primary schools.
