Hi everyone

It is amazing what a difference a bit of sunshine makes to raise your spirits.  Whilst we are all groaning that there is no end in sight to our current situation of prisoners within our 5kmarea, we could actually dust off those cobwebs from the outdoor settings, fire up the BBQ and lounge outside soaking up the sun for the last couple of days and life doesn’t seem so bad. Glass of wine in hand off course.

For those of you who were at Tuesday’s meeting, I can see you are wondering what else I will dream up for you to do via zoom.  As my microphone and speaker were “playing up” yet again, it was hard to hear everything that was said, however I do know that before we got going with the meeting, we were killing ourselves laughing at each other’s “keep fit” gear.  I did get a bit worried when John Ritchie started to strip down to his swimming trunks!  And then there was our team building session in 4 random breakout rooms to mull over what we would do-now that “we had been given an elephant and couldn’t get rid of it”. Some of the ideas that were shared were very clever – amazing how we can change an existing event to include an elephant and fundraise into the bargain – think that idea came from John Henderson’s group.

The RAWC’s Dandenong Ranges Storm Recovery Fund officially closed on Tuesday and whilst I don’t have the final figure, it is in excess of $102,000. Our Cluster Club group had our first meeting last Monday to formulate plans as to how we can utilise some of the funds. There are a few criteria items and one of them is to partner with a “low lands” Club as there are so many who have donated and want to be able to assist. The application form has now been received so we can move to the next stage. Emma and her Community team are already working on ideas.

I’m pleased to be able to bring a couple of items of good news –The first is that Vicki yesterday received an email from past DG Alma Reynolds to say that the Rotary Club of Emerald are to get the Rotary Citation for 2020-21, Alma was delighted and congratulated us all. She will email the soft copy and we will be presented with a framed citation when in-person meetings resume.  Congratulations to Vicki and the Club who worked so hard in difficult circumstances.

The second item is regarding the 2 concerts to raise funds to assist with Mental Health and the SALT project.  The first concert generated sufficient funds to allow for the predicted $1000 to come into our Fundraising account. The second concert has been rescheduled for 26th November and when able to go ahead should generate further funds. Sadly, this date clashes with the monthly Presidents meeting so I won’t be able to attend.
Next Tuesday’s Guest Speaker is still to be confirmed as Mac Barrot from Gemco would prefer to present to a live audience. However, we will have our first Know your Rotarian “Where are they from” and Tina will talk.
Happy Father’s Day on Sunday to the males in the club, Have a great day.

See you all on Tuesday.

Yours in Rotary,
Shalini Penny, President

Di Dall’Oglio  - Emerald Pilates

Di has 2 studios in Emerald.

670 million breaths in an average lifetime

Di is a Clinical Teacher – people with injuries and recovering from surgery
Pleasure, enjoys every day she runs group reformer classes to maintain health, Yoga and pilates for health.

There are 3 aspects - Breath, Pain and Movement

Breathing

Breathing and movement can be the enemy of physical and emotional pain
Don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the breath

Breathing makes you feel calm and peaceful – breathe in as deep as you can and exhale as much as you can.  Coming to your breath and breathe deeply can assist with anxiety, stress, panic, preparing for a speech, being with family, teaching – breathing can help you ground yourself and feel centered.

Nasal breathing, expands the sinus and expands the space at the back of your skull, clears sinuses, reduces headaches, blood pressure reduction.  Can change the shape of our face.  Research that indicates our jaws are becoming smaller because of the mouth breathing we do.  Can help with sleep.  Sleep apnieo due to mouth breathing.  Nasal breathing increases sense of smell – bring mind to memory or something pleasant.  It helps use aerobic systems in our body and can make exercise more enjoyable.

Breathing and focusing in the present, not past or future.  Helps us just stop and breathe deeply.   Something we can all do to help have more patience, understanding, concentration, emotional control.

Pain

Pain isn’t just physical, can affect emotional and mental wellbeing.  If you live with pain you already know this.

There are 3 types of pain - Acute, Chronic, and cancer.

Acute – short
Chronic – ongoing after surgery
Cancer pain – early stage and advance disease, debilitating side effects

The cost of chronic pain economic as well as personal it is estimated $139bn at the moment and going up to $220b by 2050

Movement

Di has an important job to help people get of pain.  Moving is the enemy of pain
Tolerance to pain – how do you tolerate pain?  We all tolerate it differently.

Quality mindful movement can assist with pain management.  It isn’t our lot in live to live with pain, we are not meant to live with chronic pain  - it is absolute nonsense you have to continue in chronic pain.

Pain a result of compression in our body can be in our spine or in our joints.  Our nerves tell us we have pain – the body is actually  asking us to do something about it.  However, quality,  good mindful movement can relieve pain,

Some things you can do to avoid pain

Movement and relaxation!

Movement education – walking and outside exercise but sometimes we are unaware of patterns in body contributing to an inefficiency.  Keep muscles strong so we don’t have nerve pain. Teaching you how to activate muscles is gold.

Gentle daily exercise is really good for you but the following are also important:

Other tips ....
Laughing
Yoga
Listening to music
Nutrition and hydration

Don’t forget - coming to the breath can help with all aspects of your health.

Rotary and Mental Health

The below link may be useful at this time :)

Just something from a RC in Sydney ...

The child - "How old are you, Grandpa?"
Grandpa - "I'm 81, dear."
The child - "So does that mean you were alive during the Coronavirus?"
Grandpa - "Yes, I was."

Child - "Wow. That must have been horrible, Grandpa. We were learning about that at school this week. They told us about how all the schools had closed; how mums and dads couldn't go to work so didn't have as much money to do nice things; how you weren't allowed to go and visit your friends and family and couldn't go out anywhere. They told us that the shops ran out of lots of things, like bread, and flour and toilet rolls. They said that the Easter holidays were cancelled. They told us about all those thousands of people that got very sick and who died. They explained how hard all the doctors and nurses and all essential workers worked and that lots of them died, too. That must have been so horrible, grandpa!"

Grandpa - "Yes, that is all correct, but I was just a kid back then. But to tell you the truth, I remember it differently... I remember playing in the garden for hours with Mum and Dad and having picnics outside and lots of BBQs. I remember making things with my Dad and baking with my Mum. I remember learning how to do handstands and backflips and having quality time with my family. I remember Mum's favourite words becoming 'Hey, I've got an idea...' Instead of 'Maybe later or tomorrow - I'm a bit busy'. I remember having a movie night three or four times a week instead of just one. You’re right - it was a horrible time for lots of people, but I remember it differently."

Remember how our children; family members and friends will remember these times.
Help take control of the memories they are creating right now so that despite all the awful headlines and emotional stories they will come to read in future years, they can only actually remember the happy times.

We need to have the right PERSPECTIVE and try to maintain a POSITIVE attitude.

4 Way Test

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
