President Marcus congratulated Colin Brown on his 46th year and one week anniversary of Rotary membership, a spectacular achievement.
President’s Report:
1. As reported in last week’s Sparkle,
- The launch of the Rotary District Conference took place at the Mulgrave Country Club last Friday night. 60 people attended which is a record.
- Excitement and support for Ken are really high through D9810
- 35 Clubs were represented on the night, 6 weren’t but most of those sent apologies
- The Spangles attended looking resplendent, but didn’t perform 😭 or ☺️
- Lorna delivered a fascinating and eloquent speech on registration
- Ken was excellent
- Shalini distinguished herself by heckling – allegedly
2. A meeting was held on Monday night to review the Club’s 3-5 year Strategic Plan. In most categories, the Club is heading in a positive direction and the Plan is going very well.
Chairperson PP PHF and RAM Director Gloria welcomed the Zoomers to the meeting and Club Service Chair Roy gave the apologies.
Gloria introduced the guest speaker, our very own PP, PHF and Membership, Marketing and PR Chair Kris Ash to unravel the mysteries of Club Runner, Rotary Websites, Facebook and other Social Media.
PP PHF John Shaw gave the response saying he was fascinated by how much there is on ClubRunner, the Socials, the RI Website etc.
Kris said there’s not much you can do wrong at the backend of ClubRunner.

Fundraising Chair PP PHF Catherine Elfick
- You will have received an email from Catherine about the need to update your Ritchie’s IGA Card. There’s a link in Sparkle to click on.
Primary Schools’ Speech Contest – Gloria Hargreaves
- The six Principals have been invited
- The names of the competitors and their chosen topics have been asked for by the 29th of July as the programme can’t be done until this information is received
- The members’ commitment sheet will be circulated at next week’s meeting.
- The trophies and book vouchers have been sourced
- Marlene Sinclair has been asked to provide her updated bio
- Catherine suggested providing a QR Code to be used by the attendees in place of a printed programme to save money and paper
- As QR Codes are an enigma to the PSSC, Gloria was advised to ask Greg Adams for help
Youth Chair PP PHF Tina McInerney
- Rotary Youth Driver Awareness – RYDA – is on Monday 15th August
- We need to provide people so that replacement teachers do not have to be employed by ESC
- It starts at 10:00am., lunch is provided and it finishes around 3pm.
- Gloria, Ian Wakefield, Ian Ash and Marcus volunteered, and Gayle said that Lyn and Alan Beckwith usually go
District Grants:
- Quite a few grants are up for grabs in places on the internet; thanks to Kris, Youth got a grant from the Casey-Cardinia Foundation last year
- An application in the form of a basic outline has to be submitted for a District Grant by 30th of June
- Graham Richardson from District will let you know if you can proceed with the detailed application
- Go to the D9810 Website -> Areas of Service -> Rotary Foundation -> David Alexander’s photo appears -> download the light blue tiles on the LHS and work your way through
On-To-Conference PP PHF Shalini Penny
- District Conference is Friday 3rd March - 5th March in Canberra
- ¾ of the Club have booked into the Realm Hotel
- If you haven’t booked in, contact Shalini
- It’s $260 a night for a room, $290 for a suite
- You need to send your credit card details to Lynn Whelan to secure your booking by January
- Use TryBooking for the Conference; it’s $295 or $245 Earlybird Special
- Partners can just pay $180 to go to the Gala Dinner at Parliament House
- Go onto the District site, go to the app., book in and answer all the questions
- There are 2 options for breakfast on Sunday - both cost $40, an All-Rotarian Breakfast (everyone’s invited) and an Alumni Breakfast
- Friday night there will be the usual Club Dinner; Shalini has contacted Belucci’s Manuka, an Italian restaurant
- On the Friday you can
- Play bowls
- Play golf for $70, tee off is 8am.
- Take the “Hop On Hop Off Bus” for $50 - It leaves from the Realm Hotel and stops at all the major attractions. The first bus in the morning stops at the National Gallery in time for a 90-minuteBrunch for $35 TBC. With the Hop On Hop Off Bus, you can alight at an attraction, and catch the next bus when it arrives an hour later.The last bus returns at 5:30pm.
- The shuttle buses are free

- Challenged all of us to at least access ClubRunner, and email Kris to let her know - those who can’t/don’t know how to get on, will get help
- Thanked Tina for organising a card and gift for Heather Nielsen following her recent operation
- Read out the letter of appreciation, that appeared in Sparkle, to Shalini from the Salvation Army after the Red Shield Appeal. The accompanying McDonalds’ vouchers have been duly given to her helpers.
- Mentioned that Greg, who was on Zoom, was overcoming Covid, Lyn was quite ill and her husband Alan is appreciative of the messages sent from the Club.
Greg was recognised again for his first District Newsletter; it was absolutely fabulous and readership has risen from 30% in the past to 80%.
