Sparkle Vol 40 #16 - 15 October 2019 (Oct 15, 2019)

G’day everyone and welcome to another Rotary week!!

Last week’s meeting was a lively affair with Committee Meetings, Kerry’s “Behind the Badge” talk (Act 1), a couple of guests, some interesting soup (I think it was turnip, swede and apple for those who have been wondering), a final farewell to Linc as he heads off to live in Vietnam to continue writing an historic novel and a Board Meeting to finish with. Kerry’s talk was really interesting and just gearing up when we realised the meeting might run a bit long, so hopefully we will get Act 2 this week. Thanks for your understanding and patience, Kerry!

We have two consistent - and persistent - guests which is fab. Roy and Annie are very welcome new faces who are hoping to join our throng soon. Please make a point of saying g’day and getting to know them a bit more.

This week we welcome Belinda Smullen to speak to us about Food!! An interesting topic, as long as I don’t have to cook it!

The Primary School Speech Competition will be held on the 22nd October…next week…at Menzies Creek Primary School, in lieu of our regular meeting. Please remember to bring along your promised supper item and come to support our amazing young speakers. It’s really an entertaining night with diverse and thought provoking topics presented by confident young people.

The District Governor, Shia Smart, is very much looking forward to visiting our Club on the 29th October. She told me she has her Halloween themed outfit all ready, but wouldn’t reveal any details! I’m hoping our Club will get into the spirit of the night and come in some kind of costume. That’s the beauty of Halloween - it can be anything, not always scary! (Some might say we’re scary enough! Lol!)

It’s World Polio Day on the 24th October. If you would like an “End Polio Now” pin to recognise this day, please let me know. We have them available for $2 each and the money raised will be contributed to our Polio fundraising.

Well, that’s about it from me for this week. It’s a bit hectic in my personal world at the moment, so please excuse any extra blonde moments, things forgotten or neglected. I want to thank all the Board Members who are being fantastic, simply getting “stuff done” and reminding me of bits need doing. Thank you also, to all Club Members for their good humour and tolerance!! Long may it last!!

Rachel was sun bathing at a nude beach because she heard it was the best way to acquire an overall tan. Day after day she was lying in the sun, yet couldn’t manage the complete tan. What could she be doing wrong to prevent her from receiving the even tones she so desired?

JUST REMEMBER, YOU ASKED FOR IT!!!!

Rachel was so shy she never removed her bathing suit.

General notices

Catherine welcomed guests Roy and Annie to the meeting, whose company we have enjoyed over several visits now.
Catherine reminded members that the meeting of 22 October will be replaced by the Primary School Speech Competition to be held at Menzies Creek Primary School. Please bring a plate of food.
Catherine also reminded members that the meeting of 29 October will be attended by the District Governor. It is a Halloween-themed night and members are encouraged to bring along their partner.
To assist the Paradise Hotel to cater for meals and arrange room set up, please be vigilant in sending an apology to Lorna if you are unable to attend a meeting. Otherwise, it will be assumed that you are attending.
The District Conference being held in Echuca/Moama on 21-22 March 2020 will feature a masquerade theme on the Saturday night.
Linc announced that he is leaving Australia and going to live in Vietnam for the next few years. Catherine wished him all the very best on behalf of the club.
Martin Buoncristiani invited everyone to a seminar he and his wife are hosting this Saturday, 12 October, from 1-2pm at the Emerald Library. They will be speaking on their latest book, Thinking in a Digital World, which discusses how parents and teachers can respond to the way children use digital technology nowadays.
John Henderson thanked all those members who have taken Kids Fun Run with Thomas flyers for distribution around Emerald and surrounds at places where families and children congregate. There will be a final meeting of the committee this Monday, 14 October at 7.30pm.
A roster for volunteering at the Dig In Café was circulated. If you can assist on the last Friday of the month, please see Susi Wilson.

Behind the badge - Kerry Champness

Kerry gave a fascinating account of his life growing up and working on large properties in the western part of Victoria, around Kaniva. Kerry’s parents were highly educated and ensured that their children also received a good education. He met his wife in 1961 when she came to live in the area and they were married in 1966.

Kerry was an agriculturalist of many pursuits, including growing gladioli for six years. He became the only Victorian grower who grew the plant year-round. He also grew wheat, barley, wool and beef. Kerry’s wool was renowned for its extraordinary length and it was highly sought after by the Japanese for many years.

During his career, Kerry became involved in agropolitics (politics to do with agriculture) and was involved in the establishment of a Victorian Farmers Federation branch.

With the help of dedicated supporters, including some who’ve been involved since the charity began; the Bailey’s Day team works tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds.

Moving forward, Bailey’s Day will continue to help improve the level of care and resources at the Children’s Cancer Centre at the Monash Medical Centre. Also on the agenda is cancer research, as we continue to strive towards a cure for children’s cancer.
