Our program of Guest speakers this year is proving to be varied and interesting thanks to our Program director Kelly McAllister. W are getting a good balance between local businesses/projects and Rotary information. I am not sure what I was expecting from Ness Kewish and EVER – Emerald Village Exercise & Recreation however her project to obtain a pop up skatepark at the old netball park and improve local facilities for the younger members, has involved a lot of lobbying, commitment and planning and with her fundraising may get off the ground soon. Greg Adams was able to offer advise gained from his former club Diamond Creek they may assist.
 
In the coming weeks we have more interesting talks.  On 26th October “Twinning” where Susi Wilson and John Shaw talk about their separate experiences growing up as a twin. And the same evening Don Borg will provide his Know your Rotarian “Where are they from” talk.
 
Last Tuesday the Membership team and I attended a Membership training session run by Past DG Alma Reynolds and Greg Mossop, RC Boronia. I was very impressed by the approach that the Boronia club has taken to this process. It does call for a strategic and structured execution. If you have friends or know of someone locally who may actually embrace becoming a member, however you don’t want to approach, can you forward their details to Marcus. You know how he could sell ice to the Eskimos!
 
This morning Tina and I delivered Year 12 Care Bags and Wellbeing Competition Vouchers and Certificates to Emerald SC. Photographs provided below. The school was thrilled and appreciative.
 
John Ritchie has agreed to take over the initiative that Peter Hadwen undertook for 8 year – “Toast to the Elderly” for residents at The Glades Care Home. It is hoped to be able to have a monthly report and then the items will be incorporated into a letter, laminated and presented to the resident. From previous experience of talking to residents whom we mentioned previously, they get such a trill from realising that an organisation such as ours would be told about them plus have a toast made to them – costs nothing but a huge boost to the resident.
 
Updates on members are as follows:
 
Gloria – Her hip replacement op went well and she is mobile and hopes to go home Saturday. Recovery is expected to take 6 weeks.
Tom – still at The Glades for the time being.  John Ritchie has seen him a couple of times and Chris Adams has had a chat with him.
Henk Van Den Bergen – We send our deepest condolences to the sudden passing of his brother Eddie.
Alan Beckwith – following his disagreement with his project car’s boot the 5 stiches have been removed from his eye and he is rivelling “scar face”. Thank goodness the impact spot wasn’t any closer to the eye.
 
Hat Day on Sunday 10th October is part of Australian Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid on Mental illness.”  1 in 5 people suffer a mental illness every year. It is thought that we can be involved and support the cause.  So please wear a hat to the meeting on Tuesday. All fines raised that evening will be donated to the cause. Donation/fines should be paid into our Bendigo bank account: BSB: 633 000   Account: 156947988. Reference as Hat Day fines
 
Next meeting, we have the Behind the Badge talk from our newest member, Tracey Bannister.  It will really interesting to learn about her journey. We will also run DG Daryl Moran’s 2nd monthly 5-minute video.

Delivering the Year 12 Bags to Emerald Secondary College

A big well done to PP PHF Tina McInerney and her Youth Committee  for organising the terrific year 12 bags for Emerald Secondary College.  We hope the bags help the students through a difficult exam period.  They have all done an awesome job to keep studying from home without the interaction with frieds at school - we wish them the very best of luck!!
 

Last Week's Meeting

EVER – Emerald Village Exercise & Recreation - Vanessa Hewish

 
 
Ness (Vanessa Hewish) from Hills Physiotherapy (and Ben Hewish)
  • Own Hills Physiotherapy Practice
  • Ness heavily involved with Emerald Fun Fest
  • Emerald Village Recreation and Exercise
  • Go Fund Me sight at the moment $25k target so everyone go and visit and support
The focus of the group:
  • 550 private group and 300 public group of interested residents at the moment
  • This is about the community understanding what council is doing
  • Lot of groups approached council to get things done and Ness is taking some of the projects on
  • There are a few things happening in Emerald – long and short term projects
    • Neighbourhood Parks
    • District Park
    • Puffing Billy Reserve – finished in 2024
    • Skate Park – in line to happen no time-line or funding, minimum of 3 yrs (5-7 yrs potentially)
    • Proposed BMX Pump Track – regraded on Friday (massive win) Proposed 2022/23
    • Emerald Lake Park – going to be a huge park, upgraded from district to regional park.Will be the jewel in the crown, 3 play spaces and potentially a water park
    • Proposed neighbourhood park in Peppi’s land 2021/2022
 
  • Not progressed because no one has pushed them to do the upgrades perhaps
  • Repairing old things is left on the agenda
  • Good work to do quickly to get kids sorted out now – kids have nowhere to go
Worral Reserve Skate Park
  • Worral Reserve – skate park will be there eventually, parking is required there, we could use the space into something temporarily but have the use of it.Pop-Up skate park quote is about $25k not loud and bolted down.Wouldn’t it be good to do the project for the next few years.
  • Council cant give us the money, but crowdfunding and come back with some $ in the bank.
  • Worral Reserve Committee happy to provide the space for a skate park – the Go Fund Me page is raising funds towards the $25k target for the skateboard equipment

  • Recovery Day for the Storms – 27 February – In Monbulk – diary placement
  • Cluster Meeting a good place to advertise what is coming up
  • Rescue Logs project – portion of funds to go to this potentially.Long term project
  • Recovery Committee Meetings next weekend.Monbulk, Belgrave and Emerald driving the initiatives
 
Primary School Speech Contest – PP Vicki Van Den Bergen
  • To be cancelled this year as the children need to perform in front of an audience.
  • Speech Competition is an extra-curricular activity and will put some pressure on the schools at the moment.
 
Deb Ball – Pres. Shalini Penny
  • Not much opportunity to run this side of Christmas
  • 26 February potential date with the venue, need to touch base with dance instructors and photographers.
  • If we cant get a Saturday, we will not get the numbers and families will want to push into the next event
  • Once locked in we will think about the June event (close off by March)
  • Participants will not be getting 100% refund, dance letters, Trybooking take a % as well so we cant give this back.There will be a few problems.
 
Ian Wakefield – PP PHF – Getting Home
  • Need to traverse NSW in 24 hrs – 1100kms to get home
