Dear friends,

Volunteering for causes, especially community causes, is what binds many of us together, however to stand for local government is one of those roles that takes a great deal of commitment. Last Tuesday, we were fortunate to have Cr David Nickell talk to us about his role as the Ranges Ward Councillor and the issues that residents and council face on a day-to-day basis. David is a good supporter of our club and I hope that he will take away with him some of our recent project highlights.

We were also fortunate to welcome back Rotaractor Kristen Jewson who was passing through on her journey up and down the east coast of Australia. For those that didn't know, Kristen has visited our club before and has experienced the thrill of cooking sausages for one of our 2024 Train of Lights activities. A must do for all Rotaractors!

From a project perspective, last week was a great day for our club as not only did we have the first InterAct meeting at Emerald Secondary College, we also set an opening day for our Golden Age Cafe - mark your diaries for the 6th May. To both Melinda and Kris, well done.

This weekend is our District Conference and I'm looking forward to catching up with Rotary friends from around the district. To me, it's a great way to reflect, reinvigorate and recharge for the year ahead. Our club does many wonderful things, however there's always more that can be done; or ways to do things differently. I'm proud of our club, our members, and our impact, and I'm excited to see what we can learn from other Rotarians and our guest speakers. I'm also looking forward to the social activities, including the gala ball (in costume of course!), and I'll talk more about this next week.

For those travelling to the District conference latter in the week, safe travels and I'll see you in Hobart.

Rotary Snippet - Rotary Tasmania - District 9830

As we are visiting Hobart & Tasmania this week, I thought I'd give a brief snap shot of their Rotary history.

  • 47 clubs throughout Tasmania - No matter where you are, there's a Rotary Club near you. With young adults provided for by Rotaract clubs in the north, south and north-west.
  • +1,200 members. Their members are work colleagues, classmates, friends, family and community members.
  • They are strong supporters of initiatives to promote mental health, partnering with Australian Rotary Health, Beyond Blue, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and 'Psychs on Bikes' for mental health initiatives.

Hills Communities Urged to Shape Their Own Future
“Decisions made in isolation down in the city are rarely good decisions for communities like ours.”
Residents of the hill's region are being encouraged to play a stronger role in shaping the future of their   communities as the area faces significant economic and social change.
Speaking at a recent community meeting, a local councillor said the hills have experienced major shifts   over the past two decades, even though population growth has remained relatively stable compared with   the rapidly expanding growth corridor to the south.
Traditional farming industries have declined as small property sizes, rising land prices and the lack of   generational succession have made commodity cropping increasingly difficult. The closure of the last   sawmill in Gembrook following the end of timber harvesting in the Bunyip forest has also marked the end   of a long-standing local industry.
The councillor said these changes highlight the need for long-term strategic planning to guide the future of   the region.
A key opportunity for residents to contribute will be the upcoming Green Wedge Management Plan,    which will examine issues such as farming, tourism, land use and environmental protection across the hills   district.
Community participation will be critical to ensuring the plan reflects local priorities.
While towns such as Emerald, Cockatoo and Gembrook are small individually, the councillor noted that   together they represent a district of nearly 18,000 people.
“By thinking and working together at a district level, we can have a much stronger voice,” the councillor   said.
With councils facing increasing financial pressure and limited flexible funding, cooperation between   communities, local organisations and government will be essential.
“The future of the hills will depend on the ideas and involvement of the people who live here.”

  Nanette Oates
We have our new resident, Nanette Oates. Nan has joined us a few weeks ago and has brought with her a   very special companion, her beautiful dog Teangi.
Teangi is a nine-year-old Kelpie whom Nan rescued 6 years ago. The two share a special bond and can be   seen out enjoying their morning walks together.
Before moving to Emerald Glades Nan lived in Heathcote. Nan would ride her scooter to the supermarket   each morning to get the Age and spend the rest of the day tending to her beautiful garden. Nan has given a   lot to the community. She is very proud to have received the Order of Australia Medal and the National   Emergency Services Medal for her service with the CFA. These honours reflect Nan’s commitment, courage   and generosity over many years.
We feel honoured to have Nan here with us at Emerald Glades. She is a delight to chat with and Teangi is   quickly becoming everyone’s favourite too.

 Community & Outreach Initiatives
Reflecting on previous visit about two years earlier, noted that Many plans made at that time did not end   up happening, but circumstances have changed. Work and routine have shifted significantly, including   periods where she hadn't been able to attend work normally.
Time spent traveling up and down Australia’s East Coast, and reconnecting with club members and   explaining how things have evolved since last here.

A community initiative called Australian Gamers was highlighted. The group creates a safe online   environment where people across Australia can connect through gaming and conversation.
 Key points:
  • Allows participation through voice or text without requiring cameras, creating a comfortable environment for many users.
  • Helps people build social connections across large geographic areas.
  • Successfully hosted its first fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), raising $2,500 in approximately 1.5 weeks.
  • The fundraiser also helped attract many new community members.
