Hello Rotary Fans and Other Electrical Appliances,

 

Here we are for another fun-filled week of Emerald & District Rotary Club madness and mayhem!!  Last week’s meeting was a bit of a laugh with toilet rolls starring in most of our mugshots!  Fancy bathrooms all the way to your basic backyard dunny (and school toilet block in East Timor!) gave our “Water and Sanitation” theme come to life.  Thank you again, to all who came along in good humour with Glen 20 and toilet paper ready.  (The Ashes made me laugh with Ian’s plunger and Kris frequently disappearing into their dunny background!)

 

Our Board Meeting was held on Wednesday night, via Zoom again, and was thought to be an effective way of conducting such a meeting.  Perhaps this format will extend beyond isolation…we shall wait and see.  

 

Discussions about Membership formed a large part of the meeting; ideas for maintaining connections with our Community also discussed.  Financially we are taking a conservative outlook as our Fun’raising opportunities are now significantly lower.  Youth Service - we’ve decided to forego the purchase of the tablets for each of the primary schools for now and wait to see if they require something else which would better serve them at this unexpected time.  Internationally, not much to report at this stage.

 

So we look forward to this week’s meeting, brought to you by our very own Vocational Chair, Mr Ian Wakefield, Secretary PP PHF!

 

That might lead you to ask the question, “What actually is Vocational Service?!”  Well, that’s a very good question and if you go onto myrotary.org you will find a document to answer this, and any other question you have!  Here is an excerpt to help on the way…

 

“THE CONCEPT OF VOCATIONAL SERVICE

The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the second object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster:

High ethical standards in business and professions
The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions:
Talk about your profession in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ occupations.
Use your skills and expertise to serve a community.
Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your words and actions.
Help young people achieve their career goals.
Guide and encourage others in their professional development.
By undertaking these activities, you bring vocational service to life. Vocational service is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world.”

 

So with all that being said, Ian’s members’ quiz this week should help us to learn a bit more about each other and our occupations which may, in turn, allow us to use our skills and expertise to serve our community, encourage and guide others etc etc.
