As I'm writing this I'm reflecting on our year, the achievements that we've accomplished and the good that we have done in the world. We started the Rotary year with the Train of Lights, then in September and November we packed two hundred birthing kits for mothers in the developing world and eighty-one 'share the dignity' bags for local mums, families and at risk teenagers. We then held our Primary School Speech contest and the fabulous 22nd year of the Rotary Kids Fun Run with PBR.
Overlaying all this is our work with the ESC Breakfast Club, St Lukes, Youth projects, Community projects, EarlyAct clubs, RCL projects, District representation (DGE Emma, PDG Ken, PP Shalini, PP Kris and myself), and planning for the relaunched Gembrook Classic Car show.
Looking forward to next year, we will have more hands-on projects, finalise our Dementia Cafe, hold the Gembrook Classic Car show, put on another Debutante Deb Ball, organise a Mental Health forum, then head back into the Train of Lights. All the while planning our attendance at District Conference and the changeover to President Gayle.
All in all, another busy upcoming six months.
Today (Sunday), more than fifty members and family enjoyed our annual Christmas lunch. This is always a special day, and I'd like to wish all members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thank you again to Roy and Ali for opening their house to us and to all members who helped organise the event, supplied desserts, bought gifts and contributed to the hilarity & frivolity of the afternoon. Its times like this when being a member is a real joy.

EarlyAct is a Rotary sponsored service club for primary school students (ages 5-13) that builds character, leadership, and community spirit by engaging kids in projects benefiting their school, local, and global communities, fostering "service above self" through hands-on activities like fundraising, care packages, and community cleanups, serving as a feeder for Interact (middle/high school) and promoting goodwill and responsible citizenship from a young age.

Rotary Club Meeting Highlights
Our final meeting of the year was filled with laughter, gratitude, and community spirit — a perfect reflection of what Rotary is all about. From reminiscing about recent adventures to planning exciting events ahead, the evening captured the heart of fellowship and service.
Guest Speaker - Marian Matt - Sherbrook Historical Society
The story about the Ned Kelly Gang’s possible visit to the Dandenong Ranges in May 1879. She describes how early settlers selected and cleared land in the dense forests between Ridge Road and Wellington Road. On a cool, crisp morning, local timber workers encountered a tall, armed man—believed to be Ned Kelly—and his gang, who asked for food and water while searching for a missing grey mare.
After the encounter, word spread quickly. Reverend Wooster galloped to Dandenong to alert the authorities, prompting a police investigation led by Superintendent Hare. Newspapers eagerly reported the supposed sighting of the Kelly Gang, fuelling public excitement.
Marian concludes by noting how realistic and credible the reports seemed, considering Ned’s movements at the time, and humorously ties the story back to local pride homegrown outlaws.
Reflections on Our Rotary Walk Adventure
The meeting began with heartfelt thanks to Mel, who organized our unforgettable multi-day walk — an idea first floated over a year ago during a casual Sunday stroll. What began as a simple thought turned into a wonderful journey of teamwork and fun.
Stories flowed about steep climbs, shared challenges, and the camaraderie that got everyone through “ten thousand hills.” Special mentions went to Marcus, Emma, and Sangita for their support and good humour on the tougher stretches. Marcus, who carried multiple packs and kept spirits high from the back of the group.
As the photos from the trip circulated, there was unanimous agreement: this won’t be our last adventure together — though perhaps with a slightly different route next time!
A New Community Project in the Works
Chris and Tina introduced an inspiring initiative: a partnership with Menzies Creek Primary School, modelled after a successful project run by the Rotary Club of Boronia.
The concept is simple but powerful — over a six-week term, small teams of Rotarians will visit the school weekly to share practical skills, mentoring, and hands-on learning with students. Volunteers don’t need formal training, just a willingness to help and a few hours to give.
The school’s principal is enthusiastic, seeing this as a way to strengthen community ties and support their 60–120 students. Members were encouraged to consider leading or assisting with the project, with final details to be confirmed in the new year.
