Trauma Recovery for Kids which is a NFP organisation
Brief Overview of Meg's talk
- Working with children experiencing trauma – childrens brains operate through their trauma, even in the womb – mother’s cortisol affects the brain and their reptilian part of the brain exist as a constant
- The brain is built through trauma – setting them up to have poor and -ve experiences in life
- They don’t engage with education and often self-medicate they go from 0 to 100 in a second.They don’t know what safe and calm is.Their normal is ‘unsafe’
- For example if you feel afraid this goes away, for these children this does not go away.They are jacked up on adrenaline – window of tolerance is therefore small
- They have a body response to trauma, not a rationale response – developed the mechanisms to keep them safe but they do not go to school and have constant anxiety and stress
- Left with a defensive, rigid and non-integrated brain and un-regulated people
- The work TREK does is around the reformation of the brain through calming and safe relationships
- Children often have poor memory – body constantly heightened and threat protect – brain needs to up and go very quickly – producing a lot of hormones, low hunger and cannot regulate to temperature.
- Complex things happening in these little systems – mechanisms and moments happen through neuro-biology

This was a great success and thank you to those who rostered on to assist and take part in the Trivia quiz (we were pipped to the post). The great takeaway is that we had 15 strong leads of people in the community genuinely interested in finding out more about the club. The MMPR committee are following these up and you will see new faces joining meetings in the coming weeks - please give guests our usual warm welcome!

PP PHF John Shaw – Rotary Foundation
- $1.3bn dollar in investment
- Gives out $350 - $400m given around the world
- A large amount of this is given to Polio Plus – Gates Foundation supports this with matching gifts
- You can contribute by becoming a Centurion $100 per annum – go to district website – avenues of service and the you will see Rotary Foundation and you can click on an application button to become a Centurion
- District Designated Funds help administer grants to clubs
- Foundation is the partners program for DG Ken – we have provided $6,000 to Foundation this year plus $1300 to Polio Plus.
- Every $1000 US allows us to give a PHF
- Ken has asked that we provide 6 PHF for the District changeover – we have already contributed funding to this so we have agreed
- If a Rotarian has contributed $1000 to the fund then you receive a PHF

PP PHF Emma Clarke – Rotary Market
- The market started as Trash to Treasure and has evolved since then taking place every 2nd Saturday at the Primary School Oval
- It is wonderful for creating connections between members who attend
- We have even received a member from the market activities
- Recommendations about the the future will be put to the Board and the incoming Board will make decisions regarding its future.
- We raised $1200 in May with a good number of stalls – the highest we have had
- We had 400 attending through the gates
- We are now having a break for the winter and are pleased to have raised $13,000 raised since we started the Market initiative
- Emma will be stepping down as coordinator and there are other opportunities to be on the committee and be a coordinator.
- Thank you to all the members of the committee – thank you to the wider club for the support!

- Gayle and Marcus attended a Probus celebration of 35 year Marcus provided a good speech
- They have 41 members attending and have embraced our renewed interest in the club and enjoys having our support

PP PHF Vicki Van Den Bergen – Recycling information
World Environment Day which was started by the United Nations in 1974, is an international day of environmental awareness and action that happens on the 5th June each year.
Wednesday 17 May is seen as the “ People's Day" for doing something to take care of the Earth, whether it be something small, or organising a more large-scale event locally like a clean-up campaign, a tree-planting drive, or a recycling drive.
We are not planning a large-scale event, but there are things each one of us can do at home for World Environment Day, and that is to NOT put the following into landfill:
- Sports equipment and balls
- Sports shoes and runners
- Pill blister packets
- Bread tags - which you are already saving (I hope)
- Disposable coffee cups
- Plastic plant pots, punnets and seedling trays
- Sunglasses and reading glasses
In June, these items can be brought to a meeting(s), after which they will be taken to the various drop-off centres where they will be recycled.
Obviously, not everyone will have all of the items mentioned, but it will be really wonderful if members and families can start this initiative for World Environment Day, and then continue throughout the year.

Marcus extended a very warm welcome to Prof Greg Snell from the Alfred Hospital.Marcus’ father and long-time Rotarian, PP PHF Chris Adamspassed away this year due to lung disease and the family wanted the money raised from funeral to go towards the prevention of Lung Disease. The family are here this evening – Marcus’ mum, Jeanette, wife Sally, and children Nicholas and Leah.

Prof Snell – Lung Transplantation - The Alfred Hospital and Monash University
- Professor Snell thanked PP PHF Gayle Barrot for organising the evening
- The Alfred undertakes 100 transplants a year and is one of the largest 10 programs in the world with some of the best recovery statistics
- A lung transpolant is one of the most complicated things you can imagine then you have to take tablets for life
- Commonest reason for a transplantation is emphysema
- He started with transplants on 20–40-year-olds now he undertakes transplants on patients into their 70’s and with donors into that age-group as well people
- 450 patients are considered for transplant each year VIC/TAS/NSW SA
- His team also runs a childrens’ program and are one of the leading teams in this space
- The rest of the body is important and patients are carefully chosen the person
- The waiting list used to be long and it took years to get lungs but can now use imperfect organs in fact there is a 50/50 chance the donor was someone who has smoked in the past
- The wait can be weeks to a 2-year wait for a cross match and the patient can be called any time of day or night for the operation that can take up to 20 hours after which they stay in intensive care.The longer-term risk is infection or rejection, but tablets assist this now
- The second person transplanted is now doing well 33 years later
- 15 years ago death was defined as no blood going to brain but now minutes after the heart stops a person can become an organ donor and be considered for transplant.Research into this area was supported by the Australian Rotary Research Fund they also found that those lungs can sit outside body for 60-90 minutes which really assists the transplant process
- The first transplant of this kind was undertaken in 2006 on a lady from Narre Warren with a 1-year-old son and this is also now being used on children.Overall this has made a difference to the recovery afterwards
- Dr Snell is looking forward to continuing successes with gene therapy moving us forward to a new era

The RIPPR, Leanne Jaggs spoke to the meeting explaining what a huge year it had been and how she had enjoyed being on the RI Strategic Committee and travelling to Evanston in the US. This experience opened her eyes to how large and wonderful Rotary really is. She commented that agility is important as we move forward.
The RIPPR had the best of fun at our District Conference dressing up and becoming one of the mad Emerald and District members for the Gala Dinner. She said we were a crazy club just like her club in NZ.
She was serenaded to by the Spangles who wrote a song in her honour.
