Sparkle - Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Emerald & DistrictImpact Matters

August is Membership Month, so it was very fitting that our guest speaker this week was Past District Governor Colin Byron. Colin is currently a member of the District Membership Committee, specialising in New Club Development.
Colin’s message was clear: Rotary needs to change and move with the times. The formation of new clubs needs to be more focused on action-based activities and creating opportunities for people to come together, volunteer and make a difference, rather than simply asking them to attend meetings. Colin also spoke about the importance of clubs working to establish more Rotaract, Interact and EarlyAct clubs.
Within our own club, we have a number of members with young adults who are the right age to become involved in a Rotaract club. It would be wonderful if we could establish a Rotaract club with these young adults. They are our future, and this is a great opportunity for us to help them develop their own Rotary journey. If anyone is interested in getting involved in this project, please speak with me or a member of our Youth Committee.
The second part of our meeting featured Membership Chair Marcus interviewing Carol, Rowan and John Shaw about their membership experiences with our club. It was heartening to hear their passion for the club, its members and the many projects we undertake. Their stories were a wonderful reminder of the impact that being part of Rotary can have.

On Wednesday, Kris Ash led another fantastic Golden Hour Café, this time with an ‘Old Time Movies’ theme. We now have five couples registered to attend, but it would be wonderful to see a few more couples join us. If you know someone who is caring for a person living with dementia, please tell them about the café. Kris or Sally would be very happy to provide any further information.
Earlier this year, our club provided funding for the installation of an AED at the Emerald SES station. On Thursday, Past President Peter, members of our Community Team and other club members met with members of the SES and Ambulance teams to acknowledge our donation and see the life-saving device in place. A big thank you to Tina, Roy and all our members who helped make this happen and ensure this important equipment is readily accessible when it is needed most. This is a wonderful example of how our club can create lasting impact in our community.
This week, our focus turns to two of our Youth programs. We will hear from Sebastien Nash, who attended RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), as well as Millie Forsythe and Andrew Algra, who were part of the six-member team that represented us at MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly).
I’m sure it will be a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand about the experiences they have had and the skills, confidence and connections they have gained through these programs. It’s also a great reminder of just how much Rotary can do to create lasting impact in the lives of young people.

I can’t wait to see you all on Tuesday!

Yours in Rotary

President Gayle

IN OUR THOUGHTS
We are all so relieved and grateful to hear that Gloria is now home from hospital following the dreadful car accident she and Everett were involved in. We know they will both need time to recover, and our thoughts are very much with them as they begin that journey.
Please know, Gloria and Everett, that we are all here for you and will do whatever we can to support you both during your recovery.

Q: What first inspired you to join our club?
A: I kind of knew everyone because my parents were members. I watched Marcus grow up! (I'm not that old) It’s a cool club.
Q: What is a personal Rotary highlight?
A: Definitely the Tenderfoot School. Another one is showing 600 people at a Rotary Conference how to do CPR on a pillow. When I had a heart attack, I was kept alive for 1.75 hours by CPR and they had to start my heart 22 times. Hence, I like Defibs! You can have an idea and with Rotary you can make it happen.
Q: What Rotary project (current or new) would you most like to be involved in in the future?
A: Tenderfoot and I think a Mental Health First Aid Course would be a great initiative to be involved in.
Q: What is the best thing about being a member of this club?
A: The people. Everybody says that, Greg. Well, it’s true!
Q: What is a life philosophy or mantra that you live by?
A: If the sun comes up in the morning, then that’s a good day. Especially after a heart attack.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would you choose?
A: The power to make everybody healthy.
Q: What is the best advice another member ever gave you?
A: Remember, everyone is Hooman.
Q. If you had to design a Rotary themed ice-cream, what would it be called and what would it taste like?
A. Rotachocolate with nuts – chocolate with nuts.
Q: What was your very first job?
A: Selling organs, the musical kind. They were Lowrey organs at Brash’s.
Q: Who is your dream guest speaker, dead or alive?
A: My Father or Kerry Packer.
Q: When you are not busy completing Rotary tasks, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Travel, boating and the grandkids.
Q: What is the biggest lesson life has taught you?
A: I survived!

Membership Month, celebrating Rotary membership through personal stories from members at different stages of their Rotary journey. The importance of inviting prospective members, getting involved in club activities, and taking advantage of opportunities.
  • Marcus shared a personal story inspired by incoming Rotary International President of 2025-26 Mário César Martins de Camargo
  • The message centred on the idea that opportunities are like open windows that may not remain open forever.
  • The story included his decision to undertake a trek to Annapurna Base Camp after being encouraged to seize opportunities while they are available.
  • This theme was linked to Rotary's Membership Month and the importance of inviting others to join Rotary.

Community

Club members together with Ambulance Vic and the SES celebrated the installation of a 24hour AED (Defibrillator) at the Emerald SES.
The unit was totally funded by our club in support of a strategy developed by our Emerald Ambulance Aux. to have 24hour Defibs. located in public locations throughout our district including Gembrook, Cockatoo and Emerald. Whilst we hope they may not be needed, if they are it will be to help save a life.

Youth - MUNA teams who debated at Warragul
The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is an inter-school debating event where teams of 6 students form a delegation to represent assigned countries.
This wonderful Rotary project is for Years 10 and 11 students interested in how the UN General Assembly works. Delegates debate international matters with the goal of promoting peace and mutual understanding, representing the viewpoint of their assigned UN member country. In addition, they gain experience with lobbying, diplomacy and voting processes within a simulated General Assembly

On Saturday August 1st Gayle, Jacquie and I travelled down to Warragul to watch a Team from the Emerald Secondary College (which included Jacquie’s daughter Millie) participate in the 2026 MUNA event.
Rotarians and teacher representatives, Assistant College Principal Tiana Clayworth and Student Connectedness Coordinator Katie Ryan, appreciated the amount of effort, preparation and research the students had done to enable them to debate on three Resolutions giving the views and interests of their allocated country which was Turkiye. They fully deserved their achievement of being presented with an Encouragement Award at the end of the event.
