Toast to the Elderly - Betty Madeley

I was in Born Shropshire England. I left school when I was 14 to work with my dad on the dairy farm. I would thresh the corn to feed to cows that I would then have to milk. One of the most cherished periods of my life was during my early years around the age of 6 when I would joyfully glide on my scooter across the farm, completely unburdened and carefree.

 

In 1988, I made a decision with my husband to move to Australia and reunite with my sons, who were already here. My passion for gardening stemmed from my involvement in agriculture, when my husband and I cultivated produce for various businesses. Additionally, I found joy in working with flowers and engaging in crafts like flower pressing, as well as creating beautiful flower boxes and potted plants. Dogs have always had a special place in my heart, particularly Jack Russells. In my leisure time, I take delight in watching shows like the Antique Roadshow and British TV programs.

 

I was married for 75 years and have sadly lost my husband earlier this year before moving into Emerald Glades. After we retired we loved travelling around Australia in our campervan as members of the Happy Wanderers Clubs. I love the beach and use to live in Dromana. Even though I am lactose intolerant I do love indulging in chocolate and cheese and biscuits.

 

My life advise I would pass on to you all is to live for today!

 

Committee Reports

• Focus of the year is to support struggling members within the community
• The committee has a budget of $11k
• Looking at some specific projects which are yet to go to the Board
  • We will continue to support the Hampers at Christmas
  • The committee has been approached by Mothers of the Hills (MOTHs) to assist with their hub refurbishment in Belgrave
  • Looking at the continuation of the voucher system at Emerald Pharmacy to help those with hardship

• First committee meeting is planned in the coming week
• We are facing a high-risk season with a lot of wood on the ground and the forecast of high temperatures
• They have approached the local council to ascertain what their focus is so we can support it
• November – can crushing machine which will be used to provide funds to local clubs and organisations
• 21-24 July we can get rid of our green waste at no cost
• Will once again be looking at getting involved with Clean Up Australia Day

• Again, there is a committee meeting in the next week or so
• The committee is keen to focus on external fundraising rather than extracting funds from Rotarians
• The fundraising target for 2023-24 is $40k

• Tina put in for 2 grants prior to 30/6/23 so that these can be accessed in this Rotary year
• There is a commitment to pay for 3 wheelchairs in the next 2 weeks

• The committee has not yet met
• Hita will organise to help out with Humble Mission
• They are looking at using the 5^th week for social nights, i.e. 4 for the year
• A list will be compiled of local businesses to speak to our club
• Interest to attend the ABC Q&A event on 24 July– please contact Gayle ASAP

• There is a good association with Emerald Secondary College and the local primary schools and this will continue
• The committee will look at Breakfast Club at ESC and try to get more members involved
• EarlyAct – (Rotary program in Primary Schools) to be considered
• InterAct – in association with St Margaret’s School in Berwick
• $12k budget for the year

• Lorna’s primary focus will be attendance – please let her know if you are unable to attend or bringing a guest in good time for the meeting.
