So, Rotary revealed - the Rotary Club of Emerald and District. What is it all about? What does it look like?
Community. Connection. Collaboration - in times of turmoil and unrest this is what is important.
Basically, being a volunteer with Rotary looks like being with your friends, who become family, to do good in our world.
If I was to paint a picture, or hold a mirror up to our Club, what would it look like?
- It looks like giving Easter eggs to our local Life View elderly residents and spending time with them.
- It looks like handing out show bags at the Kids Fun Run with Puffing Billy, where kids raise money for kids at the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre for example.
- It looks like getting dressed up to watch the local teenagers dance the night away at the Debutante Ball.
- It looks like working with different community groups such as St. Mark’s St. Luke’s, and the RSL to support our local people in need.
- It looks like giving life-saving polio vaccinations to children all around the world.
- It looks like installing freshwater “Sky Hydrants” in Third World countries.
- It looks like helping to park cars at the All American Car Display on a hot February day.
- It looks like starting up a Dementia Café for those experiencing this disease and their careers, to connect and have respite.
- It looks like fundraising by giving people alcohol while they paint and decorated cakes!
- It looks likely liaising with local businesses to provide food, fuel and pharmacy vouchers for those struggling, right here, right now.
- It looks like getting dressed up in fanciful costumes and dancing at Gala dinners at our conferences.
- It looks like supporting our local schools.
- It looks like cleaning up our beautiful township for Clean-up Australia day on a gorgeous day in March.
- It looks like all hands-on deck when there are local disasters, like the 2021 storms, or sending money to disasters further afield – like the farmers experiencing drought, where District Rotary is about to send $5000 worth of bags of pellets for livestock.
- And finally, yes, it looks like 18 long cold nights of cooking sausages for the Train of Lights to raise money! (Which we are about to do next week!)
Rotary has opportunities and resources which are unmatched by other volunteer groups. We are a worldwide organization, but a local powerhouse supporting community.
