Sparkle - Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Emerald & District

Impact Matters

It was a busy meeting this week with a focus on Lift the Lid on Mental Health. We all wore a hat for this important cause and our guest speaker, Paul Mee, district chair of Australian Rotary Health Foundation, spoke about the amazing way that money donated to this foundation is Creating Lasting Impact with 96 scholarships granted this year worth almost $2 million. We raised $500 for Australian Rotary Health at the meeting, and we presented a cheque to Paul for another $500 from the club funds.

We were all impressed with how confidently Millie Forsythe presented her speech for the Four Way Speech contest. Millie and Heidi will compete in their speech contest on Tuesday 20th October,  we are all wishing them well. We know that they will give it their very best.

This week we will hear from Graeme about his lived experience of a stroke and Sophie Taylor from Emerald Ambulance Auxiliary will also speak to us about the warning signs of a stroke. This is vital information for people of all ages.

We are halfway through the Great Ocean Walk and it’s been very challenging, it’s great to be doing such an amazing adventure with wonderful people but I’m really looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday night … if I can walk!!

Yours in Rotary

President Gayle

Q: What first inspired you to join our club?
A: I gave a talk to Rotary about Bridge which people were really polite about despite clearly being bored to death – plus they had good snacks.

Q: What is a personal Rotary highlight?
A: Cooking at St Luke’s – I LOVE it!

Q: What is something you have been fined for doing/saying?
A: Generally for saying f@#k too often.

Q: What Rotary project (current or new) would you most like to be involved in in the future?
A: Community – I think we should concentrate most of our efforts locally.

Q: What is the best thing about being a member of this club?
A: Melinda…..closely followed by the opportunity to hone my sausage cooking skills.

Q: What is a life philosophy or mantra that you live by?
A: If people appear to like me then they should be avoided for poor taste.

Q: If you could have any super power what would you choose and why?
A: Invisibility – I’d like to take out a few people around the world – invisibility gets me past their guards.

Q: What is the best advice another member ever gave you?
A: Avoid the chicken.

Q: What was your very first job and how much did it pay?
A: I was a runner for a production company. My pay was nominal but the actors tipped really well.

Q: Who is your dream guest speaker, dead or alive? Why?
A: Margaret Thatcher. I admired her as a teenager for breaking the male dominated world of politics. I still do.

Q: When you are not busy completing Rotary tasks, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I write.

Q: What is the biggest lesson life has taught you?
A: Don’t put it off.

Guest Speaker: Millie Forsythe - Student Speech Practice
Millie Forsyth delivered a practice speech using Rotary’s Four-Way Test as a framework.
  • Healthcare should uphold dignity and impartiality, yet gender and racial bias continue to influence research, diagnosis, treatment, and access.
  • Male-centred medical standards and the gender data gap can cause women’s symptoms to be dismissed; women are reported to be seven times more likely than men to be discharged while experiencing a heart attack.
  • Systemic racism and resource shortages create poorer outcomes: Black mothers face three times the maternal mortality risk of white mothers, while minority patients face a 30% higher risk of misdiagnosis.
  • Reform requires bias education, institutional accountability, culturally appropriate services, and a more diverse medical workforce.

Guest Speaker: Paul Mee - Australian Rotary Health
Thank you, Chairman Shalini and President Gayle. This presentation outlines Australian Rotary Health’s history, current programs, impact and future priorities.
District Governor Emma has selected mental health initiatives as an area of emphasis this year. Australian Rotary Health is pleased to recognise that commitment.
  • Australian Rotary Health began as a Rotary Club of Mornington initiative in the mid-1980s and developed into a national program.
  • It supports mental and general health research, Indigenous health scholarships, and rural medical and nursing scholarships.
  • Rotary clubs have helped raise $86 million, funding 874 scholarships and 741 research grants.
  • More than 330 Indigenous graduates have received support, with 40 Indigenous scholarships currently funded.
  • The 2026 budget is just under $2 million across 94 programs, including 29 funding-partner scholarships.
  • A national board of 10 Rotarians oversees the organisation, supported by a research subcommittee of 20 university academics.
  • Maintain the emphasis on early mental health support, particularly for children aged 0–12.
  • Broaden philanthropic engagement to supplement Rotary club funding.
  • Continue club fundraising through Lift the Lid activities and community events.
  • Encourage clubs to support scholarship and research partnerships, including $2,500 scholarship contributions.
  • Promote Australian Rotary Health’s impact to members, communities and prospective donors.

Pual was present with a donation of $500 for Australian Rotary Health
