Catherine's Conundrums

Welcome one and all, to the wonderful world of Medieval Madness this week!  Club Changeover 2019 at Avalon Castle, where mild mannered Ian Ash abdicates and I, Catherine Elfick, take over the world…I mean become President of the Rotary Club of Emerald & District.  (insert wicked laugh here)

We welcome our new District Governor, Shia Smart, to our Changeover and of course all our other distinguished guests.  Hopefully the night will be a bit of fun and we can say a sincere thank you to Ian and The Board for leading our Club so well in the 2018-19 year.

You will have undoubtedly noted the title of the president’s waffle at the top of this note-worthy article.  “Catherine’s Conundrums.”  Each week I will attempt to amuse you with a little riddle, puzzle or conundrum…an active mind is…well…active?  (It may even encourage us all to read The Sparkle more diligently.  J  ) This week, in keeping with the Medieval Theme, the riddles come from Aldhelm’s Enigmata which contained 100 riddles written in latin.  Aldhelm (d.709) was the Bishop of Sherborne and a leading scholar in Anglo-Saxon England. See how you go with these…

  1. I share a common fate with the sea, spinning the months around in alternate cycles. When the glory of my light-flowing form wanes so, too, the sea loses its swollen flood tides.
  2. No one can see me or catch me in their palms. I spread the noisy sound of my voice quickly through the world; I can break to pieces the oak with my loud, crashing strength, As I beat against the high poles of the sky and traverse the fields.
  3. Open-palmed hands formed me out of two substances. My inner core glows white, made of flax, Or else shines bright, plundered from a slender rush, But when my outward body bursts into yellow flower, It pours forth, spewing flames, heat and fire As moist tears drop in profusion from my brows. Yet, in this way, I destroy the horrid shadows of night And soon my burned heart leaves behind only ashes.
Pretty easy, huh?  I’ll try and find some trickier ones throughout the year.  But for this week, have a wonderful time at Changeover, enjoy the fellowship and fun and raise a goblet to the year ahead!!

Hooroo for now!

President Catherine Elfick

Last Week's Meeting

We had a well-earned night off as we were in limbo between the end of the Rotary year and the induction of our new President, Catherine Elfick next week.   A huge Pizza meal was provided by the Paradise and some psychological fun was enjoyed by all thanks to PP Ian Ash.

Peter Brock gave us a brief low-down about the RI Conference in Hamburg.  Over 25,000 attended the international conference with an opening ceremony highlighting the Bahamas.  Peter highlighted a speaker from Uganda talking about water and schooling needs that showed the impact Rotary can make.  There was also a host night in Leuneburg featuring music composed by Bach played in the local church where the musical master had been an apprentice - what an experience!

The RI Conference is in Hawaii next year and Melbourne in 4 year's time.  Something to look forward to!!

Great to see The Kids Fun Run With Thomas and All American Car Display and Man Cave Alley Featured in Rotary Down Under.

Committee Listing will be updated in next week's edition.

Happy reading folks :)
