We were delighted to welcome Sue Gregory to our club meeting on 4 December to receive a cheque for $1000 on behalf of the Australian Himalayan Foundation. Sue provided some insights into the life of Greg Gregory who was a member of Hunt's team that made the first ascent of Everest in 1953. Greg was (we are proud to say) a member of the Rotary Club of Emerald and District Inc.
Sue provided information on the work of the foundation particularly in the lower regions of the Himalayas. The Foundation ahas supported over 20,000 children particularly in assisting with teacher training (15,000 local treachers trained and mentored) and educational resources to over 196 schools. Children often have to walk 3 hours to school in the morning which is something we tend to not realise. Since the earthquake in 2015 schools have been rebuilt to be as much earthquake proof as possible utilising the design expertises of architects associated with the Rebuild Nepal Program. 85 classroom have been rebuilt.
Every single dollar leads to life changing opportunities for these amazingly resilient children.
