During PP PHF Russ Marnock's year the Rotary Club of Emerald and District supported a Reticulation Project in Timor L'Este. This project is now complete and the below outlines a communication from the Rotary Club of Hampton's Jenny Fox.
It is with great pleasure that I can advise that the final report for this project has been submitted to The Rotary Foundation.
Plan International in Timor L’Este worked with the village chiefs and the local water authorities to supply clean, adequate water to the villages of Manumera, Quiorema and Mausoromata. This involved renewing and extending pipelines and access taps, installation and/or repairs to tanks and spring water outlets, installing new hand washing stations at schools as well as education and training of the local committees.
Each village now has a ‘water committee’ to manage their system. They have been trained by Plan International and provided with the necessary tools to make repairs if required and will be overseen by the local water authority.
The project was not without difficulties as the weather and road conditions delayed delivery of construction equipment and took a large toll on vehicles which added fuel and maintenance costs. This was not surprising as these villages are in the most inaccessible part of Timor L’Este.
I would like to thank all the Clubs who contributed to this most worthwhile project and to let you know that you have made a difference to the health and lives of the 1200 inhabitants.
